LEUCOPHAEUS PIPIXCAN
The Franklin’s Gull is a small migratory gull.
In the summer, the adult’s body is white. The back and wings are a much darker grey with black tips. The bill and legs are red. Breeding adults have a black hood but in the winter, it’s mostly gone.
The Franklin’s Gull is an omnivore. They hunt suitable small prey, as well as scavenge. They breed in colonies and lay 2-3 eggs, which are incubated for roughly 3 weeks. The Franklin’s Gull was named after Sir John Franklin, the Arctic explorer. In 1823 he led an Arctic expe- dition where the first specimen was recorded.
