Royal Tern
THALASSEUS MAXIMUS
The Royal Tern is a large tern that is often seen flying up and down the beach. The body is mainly white with pale gray upper- parts. The face, neck, and underparts are white. The head has black crest and cap and the bill is a bright orange. The wings are black-tipped and the tail is deeply forked. The legs and feet are black.
The Royal Tern lives on the coast and is only found near salt water. They tend to feed near the shore or close to the beach, usually alone or in groups of two or three. When hunting, they hover before plunging for prey. The royal tern usually feeds on small fish or sometimes insects, shrimp, and crabs.
