Barn Swallow
HIRUNDO RUSTICA
The barn swallow is a small passerine bird. It is considered the most widespread spe- cies of swallow in the world. They have blue upperparts and yellow underparts. They have a long, deeply forked tail and short dark bill. When perched, Barn Swallows appear cone shaped, with a slightly flattened head.
Barn Swallows feed on insects caught in flight both above land and water. You can find them feeding in open habitats on land and coastal waters. They build a cup nest, often inside of sheds, barns and other struc- tures. They lay between 4-5 white eggs which are spotted brown and incubated by both sexes for around 2 weeks.
