Little Egret
EGRETTA GARZETTA
The little egret is a species of small heron. Its plumage is normally entirely white and has a slender black beak and yellow iris, with long yellow legs and feet. In the breeding season, the adult has two long plumes on the nape that form a crest. It is an aquatic bird, in which it feeds in shallow water and on land. It breeds colonially, making a platform nest of sticks in a tree, bush or reed bed. A clutch of bluish-green eggs is laid and incubated by both parents. They use a variety of methods to procure their food; like stalking, running, shuffling their feet or standing still. Their diet is mainly fish, but other small animals, insects and crustaceans are sometimes eaten, as well. Their sounds are indistinguishable from the cattle egret.
