Green Heron
BUTORIDES VIRESCENS MACULATA
The Green Heron is a small heron. Adults have
a glossy, greenish-black cap, greenish back and wings, a chestnut neck with a white line down the front. The bill is long and dark with a sharp point. The neck is often pulled in tight against the body. The legs are short and yellow. Both sexes are similar but juveniles are duller with streaks
of brown and white. They can be found in small wetlands and swamps and eat mainly small fish, frogs and arthropods. They nest in woodlands and swampy areas. Females lay 2-6 pale green eggs that are incubated by both parents. They are one of the few species of animal known to use tools. Their call is a loud and sudden ‘kyow’ or also series of more subdued ‘kuk’ calls.
