Zenaida Dove
ZENAIDA AURITA
The Zenaida Dove is a medium sized dove. They have brown upperparts with dark violet-blue streaks and purple on the sides of the neck. There are usually black spots on the wings and white on the trailing edges, which are seen when flying. The legs are short and red.
Zenaida Dove are very common and are found island wide, mainly frequenting open areas like pastures, but are also seen around human habitats. They forage the ground, eating grains, seeds and sometimes insects. Female Zenaida Doves lay 2 white eggs in a flimsy construction usually in trees, shrubs or on the ground. Eggs are incubated for two weeks before they hatch. They make a mournful cooOOoo-coo-coo-coo call.
