Yellow-Banded Millipede
Anadenobolus Monilicornis
Anadenobolus monilicornis, commonly called the yellow-banded millipede or bumblebee millipede, is a Caribbean species belonging to the family Rhinocricidae.
These millipedes are typically dark brown with striking yellow rings encircling each body segment. Adults reach about 2.5–3 cm (1.0–1.2 in) in length, and their legs and antennae are often a noticeable reddish colour.
The species lives primarily within leaf litter and decaying plant matter, where it plays a role in breaking down organic debris. An interesting behavior has been recorded in the wild: certain birds and captive primates have been seen crushing these millipedes and rubbing the resulting secretions on their feathers or fur. This may serve as a natural insect-repellent or parasite-deterrent.
