Adzeheads & AxeHeads
Parts of the Queen Conch
shell were often used by
native Arawak and Carib
Indians to make a variety of
primitive tools and jewelry.
The photo on the left shows
primitive Adzehead and Axe
Heads made from a section
of shell. Adzehead and
Axe Heads came from the
Arawak and Carib people
who lived on the islands of
Jamaica and Barbados. Tools
such as these were made
with shell and stone in the
absence of metal.
The Caribbean Indians also
used to blow them as horns.
This practice is still used to
day to make noises at West
Indies cricket matches.
