Sanderling
Sanderling
The Sanderling is a small, plump, energetic wading bird. Sanderlings, when in non- breeding plumage, are very pale overall: light gray above and white below. In spring and summer, Sanderlings are spangled black, white, and rich rufous on the head, neck, and back. Their legs are black and they have a stout bill about the same length as the head.
They are often seen on open beaches and mudflats. These birds forage by probing in shallow water or on wet mud. Small flocks run back and forth as if chasing the waves.
