Lighthouse
Lighthouse
South Point Lighthouse, is one of the four lighthouses on the island of Barbados. Located in the parish of Christ Church, it stands at the southernmost point on the island. It is also the island’s oldest lighthouse, brought here in 1852 after being showcased at London’s Great Exhibition in 1851. It was crafted entirely from cast iron and stands at 27m (89 ft). The lighthouse is painted with distinctive red and white horizontal bands, making it easy to spot along much of the south coast.

The lighthouse guided ships safely to Barbados with its rotating beacon that flashed three white lights every 30 seconds. Over time, modern navigation technology has made lighthouses obsolete. However, the South Point lighthouse remains active. The grounds are open to the public, but the tower itself is closed for safety.

It was restored between 2004–2011 and freshly painted in 2018. This landmark also appears on the reverse of Barbados’s 5-cent coin since 1973.

South Point Lighthouse offers locals and visitors alike an easily accessible and close up view to the islands oldest lighthouse.
