Ameiva
In the sun-kissed landscapes of Barbados, the Ameiva lizard (Ameiva plei) darts across the terrain, embodying agility and adaptability. This striking reptile, with its vivid colors and energetic demeanor, is a captivating presence within the island's diverse ecosystem.

Named after the Greek word "ameibein," meaning "to change," the Ameiva lizard's appearance showcases remarkable diversity. Ranging from vibrant shades of green to earthy browns, its coloration often aligns with its habitat, allowing it to seamlessly blend into its surroundings. This chameleon-like quality is complemented by its swift movements and exceptional climbing abilities.

Favoring open, sunlit areas such as grasslands and clearings, the Ameiva lizard is a true sun enthusiast. Its warm-weather habits make it a frequent sight on sunlit paths and rocks, basking in the island's tropical climate. Its diet primarily consists of insects and small invertebrates, which it actively hunts down with speed and precision.

Though not endemic to Barbados, the Ameiva lizard has established a firm foothold on the island, adapting to various ecological niches and contributing to the local food web. However, the invasion of non-native species and habitat loss pose challenges to its continued survival.
